Myth: Multi-Tasking Increases Productivity

Our society today places an enormous emphasis on being more productive. Consider, we cannot afford any extra hours in the day to get more done. People usually turn to multi-tasking to try to cheat the system. While some individuals are certainly better at multi-tasking than others, overall, this approach is not actually in your best interest.

Multi-tasking, often involves hopping from project to project, completing a small portion of each task at a time. It tends to increase the completion time for each task. If you think about it, there is a certain time expense involved. Even in the process to switch from one job to the next thing and to another, time is still a factor.

While this expense is small individually, time still matters. It fluctuate as multiple things begin to add up rather quickly. I can waste your time and decreasing your production.

Fact: Focus On One Thing at a Time Actually Saves Time

This fact is supported by the myth we just discussed. One of the reasons for knocking out each task one by one is that you eliminate wasted time. Over the course of your workday, you end up saving transition time.
However, the most important reason focusing all of your mental resources on a single thing before moving onto the next is the additional time you DON’T spend revising your work. It is invaluable and actually a time saver.
